Pickup will have a built-in ambient light sensor. Help us tune it — how do you anticipate using it?
- I want to measure indoor light levels
- I want to measure outdoor light levels
- I want to detect sudden changes in light level
- I don’t think I’ll use the sound level sensor
Do you have any specific use cases? Comment below.
I would like to be able to verify the timers on our animal habitats are working without having to come back at night.
What do the timers do, turn heating lamps on and off?
Regular LED lighting is what I want to monitor. I have a WiFi thermometer that I am already using for heat lamps.

I want to measure ambient light in our garden, on our roof (to prove that we have enough hours of sun for a solar panel since on the satellite map it looks like trees block the roof, which is not really true), and most of the time, I will be using it to determine when to have the shades in the living room open and closed. If it’s cloudy, for example, there is too little UV and not enough light to have them closed.

The roof solar exposure is a good one—I face a similar problem (have you seen the solar pathfinder installers will use? beautiful).
What would be neat is using a grid of Pickups to quickly map exposure over the whole roof, or garden. This will be simple enough, except for the cost of that many Pickups. Maybe we could have a rent-for-the-month option for those situations.

I’m looking to do the exact same thing!
